Rhino.Inside.Revit is free to download, but it is not free to use — it requires a paid Rhinoceros licence ($995 new, $595 to upgrade) and an active Revit subscription on the same machine. Rhino itself is perpetual, with no maintenance fees.
So the real question is not “is it free” — it is “what do I get for $995, and is there a free route that does the job?” There are three, and they are not interchangeable.
The three approaches at a glance
| Rhino.Inside.Revit | Dynamo | Speckle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free add-on + $995 Rhino | Included with Revit | Free to use |
| Rhino required? | Yes, licensed | No | The app does; the connector does not |
| How it connects | Loads Rhino inside Revit’s memory | Native Revit node graph | Sends data through a server |
| Live two-way | Yes | Yes | Yes, but via the server |
| Grasshopper | Full | No — Dynamo is not Grasshopper | Full |
| Needs a server | No | No | Yes |
| Best for | Complex geometry in a live model | Revit-native automation | Sharing geometry without hosting Rhino everywhere |
Rhino.Inside.Revit — full Grasshopper, live, in Revit’s memory
This loads Rhinoceros and Grasshopper inside Revit’s process. Rhino geometry appears in the Revit model and updates live. No export, no import, no file exchange.
Use it when you are running Grasshopper definitions against a live Revit model — complex curtain walls, generative massing, paneling systems. This is the thing file exchange genuinely cannot do, and it is why people pay the $995.
The cost nobody mentions: every workstation running a Rhino.Inside.Revit script needs its own Rhino licence. It does not float across your office.
Requirements: Revit 2018–2027, Rhino 7, 8 or 9. Windows only, because Revit is Windows-only.
Dynamo — the answer most people actually need
Dynamo ships with Revit at no extra cost. It is a visual programming environment for generating and editing Revit model elements natively.
Use it when your automation is Revit-shaped: generating rooms, placing families, setting parameters, scheduling, or anything that operates on Revit’s own data model rather than on geometry.
The honest limitation: Dynamo is not Grasshopper. Its geometry handling and node ecosystem are weaker, and the community-written libraries are smaller. If you want to solve Grasshopper-shaped problems, Dynamo will not get you there in comfort.
But if your parametric needs are light, Dynamo is genuinely enough — and it costs nothing. This is where most practices should start, and it is the most under-considered option in this whole comparison.
Speckle — free, server-based, no per-seat Rhino
Speckle connects Rhino, Revit, Grasshopper and others through a hosted server. Geometry is sent as a lightweight stream rather than copied between apps.
Use it when you want to share Rhino models with a team, or bring geometry into Revit, without every user holding a Rhino licence. The application that sends or receives still needs its own licence; the point is that not everyone does.
The trade-off: it needs a server (self-hosted or Speckle’s), it adds a network dependency, and it is not the same as a live in-process link. For large federated models, coordination is often a feature rather than a compromise.
Which should you choose?
- Start with Dynamo. It is free, included, and it is probably enough. If you hit a wall — Grasshopper-shaped geometry, complex form-finding, paneling systems — then buy Rhino and add Rhino.Inside.Revit.
- Choose Speckle if your problem is sharing, not authoring.
- Choose Rhino.Inside.Revit when you need full Grasshopper against a live Revit model and you have confirmed the $995 per workstation is acceptable.
The cost, honestly
| Path | Year-one cost per user | Year two | You own it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamo | $0 (Revit only) | $0 | Yes, with your Revit seat |
| Speckle | $0 connector | $0 | Yes |
| Rhino.Inside.Revit | $995 Rhino + Revit | $0 | Yes — perpetual, no maintenance |
Rhino 8 is $995 for a new single concurrent user, $595 to upgrade from an older version, and $195 for students. Licences are permanent and do not expire, with no maintenance fees. There is also a free 90-day Rhino evaluation licence, which means you can test the entire Rhino.Inside.Revit workflow at no cost before committing.
Do that first. Download the evaluation, run one real Grasshopper definition against a live Revit model, and see whether it earns $995 in your practice.
The honest drawbacks of each
Rhino.Inside.Revit: a second paid licence per workstation; Windows only; a genuinely steep learning curve in Grasshopper; and Rhino and Revit can fight over geometry that is not properly modelled in one system or the other.
Dynamo: not Grasshopper; smaller community ecosystem; node graphs become unmaintainable spaghetti unless versioned from day one.
Speckle: needs a server; adds a network failure mode; and it coordinates data rather than holding a single authoritative live model.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rhino.Inside.Revit free?
The add-on is free to download. Using it requires a paid Rhino licence ($995) and an active Revit subscription, so the real cost is $995 per workstation plus your Revit cost.
Do I need a Rhino licence for Rhino.Inside.Revit?
Yes. It loads Rhinoceros into Revit’s memory and Rhino will not run without a licence. Student Rhino is $195, and a 90-day evaluation is free.
Is Dynamo free?
Yes. Dynamo ships with Revit at no extra cost. It is the best starting point if your automation is light.
Is Dynamo the same as Grasshopper?
No. Dynamo is Revit’s native visual programming tool. Grasshopper is Rhino’s, and is more capable for complex geometry.
What is Speckle used for?
Connecting Rhino, Revit and Grasshopper through a server so teams can share and coordinate geometry without every user holding a Rhino licence.
Can I test this before paying?
Yes. Rhino offers a free 90-day evaluation licence, and Rhino.Inside.Revit downloads free. You can evaluate the whole workflow at no cost.
