Open-source desktop publishing for print — the closest free equivalent to InDesign.
Why we recommend it
It handles genuine print production: CMYK, spot colours, ICC profiles and press-ready PDF/X output. For anyone laying out a zine, book or poster who can't justify a Creative Cloud subscription, nothing else free comes close.
Strengths
- Real CMYK and spot-colour support
- Press-ready PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 export
- ICC colour management built in
- Runs on Linux, macOS and Windows
Drawbacks
- Interface feels dated next to InDesign
- No native .indd import, so migrating existing work means rebuilding
- Typography controls are less refined for fine typesetting
